On page A12 of Monday’s (8/27/07) issue of the New York Times there is a powerful article about the attempt to overhaul health care in the California Correctional System. It is in such wretched shape that a class-action suit resulted in a federal court order placing the entire system in receivership. The conditions described in the article read like something out of the Middle Ages and the receiver designated by the federal court is a hard-nose man by the name of Robert Sillen. His designated authority is far-reaching and he isn't reluctant to exercise it.
The majority of the inmates in the California system are Black and Hispanic and, as I have said in the past, it is a multi-billion dollar enterprise. Should this successful class-action suit and the resultant federal court order suggest the possibility of another to place the “correctional” (read educational) component of the prisons in receivership too? The money is there to do much better, but these mostly young men are simply being hardened, embittered and released back into society with no more legitimate skills than they brought with them upon entry.

wikinvest.com trends & ownership?

Who owns wikinvest? Who approves edits of posts, submissions & comments? Who founded it and how will wikinvest.com make its money? Shouldn't financial data have disclosure as to the sources? Is there a management page of who in the Presidio is running this?
And here is the question always asked when other media sources analyze stocks, "which of the companies do the wikinvest people themselves own?" Is there any insurance that their own financial interests are kept separate from the analysis?
They are using the wiki non-profit charitable brand. Are they sanctioned by http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Foundation ? Is wikinvest a 501(c)(3) non-profit?

the industry of International Business as a whole.
Global Elevation is a non-profit organization that embraces the
business potential of high-school and university students of
African-descent and supports the undeniable strength of the
communities of the African Diaspora. My business partner, Melissa
Howell, and I founded Global Elevation from a deep-rooted passion to
provide greater success opportunities through business development for
young minds throughout the world. We both have been blessed to travel,
work and study around the world and know these experiences have opened
our minds to endless possibilities. We are also motivated by the
negative portrayals of 'the black population' around the world and
feel its time that the success stories are told, shared and supported.
There are many bright and ambitious young people who aren't provided
the same opportunities to travel and dream beyond their immediate
surroundings. We hope that through Global Elevation these minds can
see the development of their businesses as local successes and strive
towards the expansion of international business development as a way
to harness the opportunities that are available globally.
Global Elevation provides on-going business leadership and
entrepreneurial skills training to students who are passionate about
running a business, leading a business and transforming a business
idea into a reality. The purpose of our program is to offer direct
access to current business leaders and professionals who serve as
instructors, mentors and role models through a customized business
leadership course. We target students of African-descent and members
of the African Diaspora by promoting this opportunity to students at
HBCUs (Historically Black Colleges & Universities) and high-schools
identified with low-economic resources who seldom offer similar
extra-curricular opportunities. Our course is offered through a local
and international component, to expose students to the varied
economic, political and social implications of business development
through the achievement of the mission and vision of a sustainable
global business. During the local component, students meet with local
business leaders to gain insight on how to successfully run or lead a
business that supports their own community. These workshops are
offered on a monthly/bi-monthly basis and pool resources from local
businesses, corporate offices and academic institutions. The
international component brings students from various countries
together for a two-to-six week immersion course focused on
international business development. Students gain direct cultural
exposure through the global participants in the program, cultural and
international business tours, as well as a first-hand understanding of
the cultural implications of 'taking a business global'. Global
Elevation offers this experience to the students at no cost to them in
an effort to promote more business leaders in African Diasporic
communities. In addition to our specialized program, we also offer
support to high schools and universities in the development of
traditional study abroad programs.
As a non-profit, funding comes from corporate sponsors who recognize
the benefit of hiring business leaders who have gained exposure to the
International Business industry early in their academic careers. We
also pool financial resources from individual sponsors and supporters,
local businesses, government grants and other funding institutions. In
an effort to maintain a continuous flow of financial resources, we
also organize Trips for the Social- & Service-Hearted Enthusiasts.
These trips are planned for groups of ten or more travelers who want
to combine opportunities to serve as well as tour the communities they
visit. These trips are targeted towards Community Service
organizations with an interest in global community and youth development.

A short while ago I might have shared with you my thoughts about the possible use of athletic coaches (especially those with winning records) as classroom teachers in troubled urban schools. In a time when much of what we read about young black males concerns mindless violence and self-destructive behavior, athletic coaches have repeatedly assembled thousands of them into winning teams. Somehow these men are able to convey and reinforce the related values of discipline, organization, analysis, teamwork, efficiency, preparation and ultimate success.
One of the best examples of these "miracle workers" is Robert Shannon, former head football coach at East St. Louis Senior High School in East St. Louis, Illinois. In a predominantly black city where social and economic problems seem innumerable, his teams won six state-wide championships in fifteen years! All of the championships were at the highest level of competition in Illinois.
In his New York Times column on Saturday, August 11, 2007 Bob Herbert wrote about the execution-style killings in Newark, NJ and other deadly shootings in Chicago, Camden, NJ and Philadelphia. He lay much of the blame at the feet of parents (missing and present) and I was reminded of athletic coaches like Bob Shannon who often serve as surrogate parents to their players. What if Shannon's special talents were brought into the classroom?

Ending Youth Violence
To the Editor:
Re “A Bloodbath in Newark, and Beyond” (column, Aug. 11):
Bob Herbert suggests that most of those who raise the young violent criminals on our streets are failing in their parental duties. I agree, and perhaps it is time for society to intervene in the “cultural triangle” of home, school and place of worship.
Homes and places of worship are off limits, but schools are different. It is permissible for society to regulate performance standards and behavior of students and teachers.
In black communities, most of the violence is perpetrated by young males, but in those same communities, athletic coaches have been amazingly successful in motivating and directing boys and young men. Shouldn't we hear from these remarkable mentors and recruit some of them back to teaching academic courses?
Where necessary, we should even encourage schools of education to offer them courses to refurbish their teaching skills. These men know something we don'’t.
